About Me

About Glen Bell

I created Bay Area Jazz Lines to share music I love and help others discover the Bay Area’s rich jazz scene.
My introduction to jazz came when a high school friend played Freddie Hubbard’s Red Clay. Its blend of post-bop and soul jazz caught my ear and led me to discover artists such as George Benson, Stanley Turentine, and Gene Harris.
In college, listening to the Bay Area’s KJAZ radio station opened up a whole new world. Through the classic recordings of the 1950s and 1960s, I discovered Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and many others. Kind of Blue became—and remains—my favorite album of all time.

I was hooked. Visits to local record shops and jazz venues became part of my life, and over the years I built a sizable jazz record collection. Along the way, I discovered that sharing a great recording with a friend could be just as satisfying as finding it myself.

Bay Area Jazz Lines grew out of that same pleasure. Here you’ll find my desert island albums, playlists for different moods, introductions to influential musicians, and resources for enjoying live jazz around the Bay.
Whether you’re just discovering jazz or have loved it for decades, I hope this site helps you find something that moves you—and inspires you to pass it along.

Explore the music. Discover the artists. Experience Bay Area jazz.
